6.7 CUMMINS LOSING POWER? THE USUAL SUSPECTS

A 6.7 Cummins does not lose power politely. One week the truck pulls like it always has, the next it falls on its face merging with a trailer. Owners usually hear three guesses from the internet: injectors, turbo, or tuner. Sometimes. Here is the order we actually check.

01 Fuel pressure tells the truth

Low rail pressure under load is the most common power thief on these trucks, and it hides without setting a code at first. A restricted filter, a tired lift pump, or a high-pressure pump losing its edge all show up in live data long before a warning light. Five minutes on the scan tool under load answers what a month of guessing cannot.

02 The turbo and its plumbing

The variable-geometry turbo on the 6.7 works hard, and so do the boots and charge pipes around it. A split boot bleeding boost feels exactly like a dying turbo without costing like one. We pressure-test the charge system before anyone says the word replacement, and we check actuator sweep while we are in there.

03 Sensors that lie to the ECM

MAP, rail pressure, and exhaust back-pressure sensors feed the computer that decides how much power you get. A drifting sensor makes the ECM protect the engine by pulling timing and fuel: the truck is healthy but the computer thinks it is not. Reading live values against factory spec finds the liar.

STRAIGHT ANSWER Several very different problems produce the same seat-of-the-pants symptom on this engine. Diagnosis on a scan tool under real load costs a fraction of parts-cannon guessing. Bring it in, we will put numbers on it before anyone spends real money.

FAQ Quick answers

My Cummins has no check engine light but feels weak. Worth a look?

Yes. Fuel restriction and boost leaks routinely rob power for months before a code sets. Live data finds them the same day.

Do you work on trucks with emissions equipment intact?

Yes, that is our standard work: diagnosing and repairing the truck as built, with factory parts available through our Mopar hub relationship.

How much does diagnosis cost?

Call the shop and we will quote it straight. It is a fraction of one guessed-wrong injector set, and it comes off the repair when we do the work.
