01 Air where fuel should be
Duramax fuel systems pull fuel rather than push it on many years, which means any tired seal, filter housing o-ring, or loose connection lets the system bleed down overnight. The engine then cranks until fuel is re-drawn. Long crank after sitting, but fine warm, points here first, and the fix is often a housing reseal, not injectors.
02 Glow plugs and the cold-start system
Diesels need heat to light off, and the glow system carries that job on cold mornings. A couple of dead glow plugs hide completely in warm weather and show up as rough, smoky, reluctant cold starts. Testing them individually is quick and definitive.
03 Batteries and cables, the boring truth
Diesel compression demands serious cranking speed, and cranking speed is the first casualty of aging batteries or corroded cables. A diesel that cranks slow starts hard even with a perfect fuel system. We load-test both batteries before blaming anything expensive.

Considerably. That pattern points to fuel bleed-down, glow system, or cranking power rather than internal engine trouble. All three are quick to test.
Should I use a block heater in Texas?
On work trucks that must start at 5am on the coldest mornings, yes. Cheap insurance, easier on the engine, and we can confirm yours works while the truck is in.
Could it still be injectors?
It can: worn injectors leak down and extend cranking. That is why we test in order; injector conclusions should come from data, not from being the most expensive guess.
